ASME Members Selected as New Faces of Engineering Winners ASME Members Selected as New Faces of Engineering Winners ASME Members Selected as New Faces of Engineering WinnersApril 7, 2017 ASME member Emily Worinkeng and student member Meredith Burke were among the 21 engineers and engineering students who were selected as the 2017 class of the New Faces of Engineering program, which is administered by DiscoverE and sponsored this year by NCEES and Lockheed Martin. Each year, the New Faces program spotlights the accomplishments of early career engineers and engineering students and the contributions they make to the profession and to society. Emily Worinkeng welches named ASMEs New Faces of Engineering winner for 2017 in the Professional category.Worinkeng was named as ASMEs winner in the Professional category, which recognizes the achievements of practicing engineers up to the age of 30. Burke was selected as the Societys winner in the College Edition category, which is open to thir d-, fourth- and fifth-year engineering students. Worinkeng and Burke were among the six New Faces finalists from ASME announced in February during Engineers Week. The winners of this years New Faces competition were announced during a webinar on April 5, the second annual Global Day of the Engineer.Worinkeng, who has been an ASME member since 2012, is an assembly and automation engineer at The Boeing Company in North Charleston, S.C., where she helped develop new safer and more efficient processes for installing and aligning airplane wing flaps and supervised a team that developed an innovative accelerated curing system for the company. She received a bachelors degree in physics and mathematics in 2011 from Berea College, Berea, Ky., and a masters degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University in 2013. What gets me excited about going to work is the knowledge that I acquire about the process of making airplanes as well as working alongside the smartest people in the world, Worinkeng wrote in her New Faces application essay. As I crawl inside the wings of an airplane, I realize this is something not everyone gets to do. It is fascinating to see the 787 airplanes flying and delivered to our customers and to know that I helped make that happen. Being a part of the team that delivered Japans ANA Star Wars-themed Dreamliner was an unforgettable experience. She went on to add, Today, I am doing exactly what I like, which is solving problems and finding efficient ways to improve processes. ASME student member Meredith Burke was selected as ASMEs New Faces?College Edition winner for 2017.Burke, ASMEs 2017 New Faces-College Edition winner, is a mechanical engineering major at Southern Methodist University. Burke, who is also studyin g math and art as her second and third majors, plans to forge a career in engineering that incorporates elements of these other interests. In addition to her studies, Burke has been active in a number of clubs and activities at SMU, including the Lyle School of Engineerings ambassador program, the Theta Tau Engineering Fraternity chapter, and the universitys marching band.

The Naked Truth About Public Speaking The Naked Truth About Public Speaking I listened to my dad. My first job after graduate school was in the training department of a bank, designing and presenting supervisory training programs. At the first workshop I was to teach, my co-presenter didnt show up. I was on my own. All I remember about the workshop is that I got through it. Afterwards, I made the decision to learn all I could about presentation skills. I never wanted to feel that kind of fear again.Its many years later and today I do public speaking almost every week. And I love it. Why? Because along the way, I learned some secrets, which I will share with you.But first, forget the advice you got about picturing the audience naked. It doesnt work. Its leid real, and it doesnt do anything to help you connect with your audience which is your ultimate goal.Decide what you want to have happen as a result of your presentation. By focusing on what you want to convey you start to forget about yourself and move into thinking about your goal. Do you want to impart information? How can you do that clearly and concisely? Do you want to motivate your audience? If so, what do you want them to do? Do you want to persuade your audience? If so, persuade them to do what? After you determine your goal, you can figure out how to get there.Put yourself in the audiences shoes. Why are they there? What do they know about the subject? About you? What do they want to walk away with? Putting yourself in their shoes will make the difference between a presentation that doesnt hit the mark and one that they will enjoy and remember. And, thinking about your audiences needs moves you from thinking about yourself to thinking about others.Organize your thoughts. When I outline a presentation, I start in the middle by writing down the key points I want to make. I think of stories I can tell and data I want to include. Next I figure out how I will close my presentation. Last, I figure out h ow I will open. When I begin to speak, I often have memorized my opening and closing and know my outline. That leaves me free to speak extemporaneously and naturally throughout the core of my speech.While you are writing the outline of your speech, anticipate and answer questions the audience might have. Ask yourself What are the weak points of my case? What is the most difficult thing I have presented? What can I do to express it in another way? If you are prepared, you wont be so scared.Speak from your heart. Dont be bashful about showing your personal commitment to the ideas you are presenting. The most compelling thing you can do is be real to be authentically, genuinely yourself and no one can do that as well as you. Forget what you were told about standing still and not moving your hands when you speak. Do what comes naturally.Connect with your audience. Ask questions of participants. Make meaningful eye contact with as many people as you can. The former Mayor of New York, E d Koch, often asked its citizens, How am I doing? The key to connecting with any audience is not knowing how to give to them, but knowing how to receive support from them.Tell a story. Who doesnt love a story? Who doesnt want to be drawn in and captivated? Powerful personal stories increase the impact of any presentation, increase retention and believability, and help you clarify your message. Tie your message to the story. Tell how the story shaped your thinking, taught you a lesson, or allowed you to see things or do things differently.Begin when you are ready. Take your time, and get centered. Breathe. Focus. Look at your audience. You may have stage fright. So what? Most of us do. Honor it and move through it. In surveys, many people report that their fear of public speaking is greater even than their fear of death. You may never completely get over the fear of speaking in public, but you can learn to move through it with grace.Becoming a polished speaker takes time, but its a s kill that can be learned. Use every opportunity you can to speak because the more you do it, the better you become.

The runner-up essays will be published in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more terrific career advice from a few of our readers.I wish someone had warned me that when you get your first job, no one is going to tell you what to do. (Well, OK, in some positions they will- theyll have specific training sessions for you to attend, or assign you to a specific rotation for a year). But if youre like I was four years ago, armed with a liberal arts degree and no relevant experience in the industry youre about to enter, then the following words are for you. There are no midterms or finals anymore. Theres no syllabus that outlines when papers are due or suggests additional reading (as you can probably tell, I was always very good at doing what I was told). At work- whether youre starting a new job, you just got promoted, or youre making a career change- you have to figure out how you can contribute. Being proactive is key. But when you dont have any experience or the right kind of experience, being proactive can be challenging. And what I wish I could go back and tell my 22-year-old self is this Ask questions. Ask so many questions that you start to annoy your manager (because genuine curiosity and enthusiasm will never actually annoy your manager). The beauty of being new is that no one expects you to be an expert.Asking questions however, requires some measure of vulnerability. It means being willing to admit what you dont know. This is something Ive always struggled with. I spent the first year-and-a-half of my job right out of school asking zero questions because I was working for incredibly smart people, and I didnt want them to think I was stupid. That was stupid. I lost out on 18 months of learning and building skills that probably wouldve propelled me to wher e I am now in my career a lot sooner.Because heres the hard truth No one is going to take you by the hand and tell you how to move forward on your own career path. My managers were too busy doing their own jobs to think of extra tasks or projects to assign me that would help me grow. During the 18 months in which I wasnt asking questions, I was executing everything within the scope of my job description seamlessly. But thats all I was doing, and I was so, so bored. Turns out that the best way to prove youre ready for more responsibilities is to just actually take on those responsibilities. When I finally realized I wasnt going to move up the ladder at my company by doing only what was expected of me, I started to proactively look for ways to help my team. When my manager said Wouldnt it be nice if we had a report that... or We dont have research on those competitors... I jumped at the chance to fill in the gaps. And my supervisor noticed.I wish I could tie up this anecdote by tellin g you that asking questions and being proactive led to a promotion and that Im now doing exactly what I want to be doing. Im not, and I cant even sweeten this story by telling you that I got promoted. I work in an industry thats facing some pretty complex challenges right now, and unfortunately the opportunity to move up within my old department didnt pan out. But I can tell you that Im kicking butt in my current role and recently received an exceeds expectations rating during my year-end review, which is pretty rare at my company.And while Im not exactly where Id like to be, I did learn this The most successful people Ive met throughout my professional experience know what they dont know, and arent afraid to admit it. They are inquisitive and enjoy figuring out how they can help their teams, regardless of what their job title is. They are thinkers and problem solvers, and most importantly, they dont sit around and wait to be told what to do. For the past year, for example, Ive been fortunate enough to work for someone who fits this exact description. My current supervisor joined my company last year after having spent 12 years in a completely different industry. On her first day she probably asked me 30 different questions about our distribution processes. Now just one year later, shes led and executed several projects that have resulted in significant cost savings for the company and improved processes for product shipments. Shes successful because shes curious and thoughtful and enjoys figuring out how she can help our company move forward, which, in turn, has inspired me to do the same.So while school is over (and may have been for quite some time now), learning doesnt have to be. And if you want to continue to move forward, your education will never be finished. But just how much you decide you want to learn and grow is completely up to you. Carlson dreamed of making inventions that would help him escape a life of poverty and change the world. Born in 1906 in Seattle, WA, he spent a disadvantaged childhood living with his sickly parents. He worked before and after school hours to help support his family by the time he was in high school he was the main provider. When he was 17, his mother died from tuberculosis and his father was crippled with arthritis.Throughout his adolescence, Carlson was intrigued by science, chemistry, engineering, and graphic arts. He studied the lives of inventors. His favorite possessions as a boy were a rubber stamp set and a typewriter.The idea of making an invention appealed to me as one of the few available means to accomplish a change in ones economic status, while at the same time bringing to focus my interest in technical things and making it possible to make a contribution to society a s well, he wrote many years later.After high school, Carlson enrolled at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a solid but not spectacular student, graduating with a degree in physics in 1930at the onset of the Great Depression. Jobs were scarce. After applying to 82 companies, he took a low-paying job as a research engineer at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York City.Carlson quickly became bored and transferred a year later to the kapitnspatent department, where he assisted the companys attorneys. Here his creativity began to take hold and he recorded hundreds of ideas for new inventions in his personal notebooks. After being laid off in 1933, he found a job with PR. Mallory Company, an electronics firm. At night, he studied law and earned a law degree from the New York Law School later he was promoted to manager of Mallorys patent department. Here he quickly realized how much time was wasted in the department because there were not enough carbon copies for the patent paperwork if more copies were needed, documents had to be retyped and proofed again. Carlson decided to invent a copying machine that would make a copy of an existing document with the push of a button.Chester F. Carlson with the Xerox Model A in the 1960s.Carlson was especially inspired by the research of Hungarian physicist Pl Selnyi, a leader in the little-known field of photoconductivity and electrostatic images, whereby an image could be formed on a specially coated, electrically charged plate through the application of light. Carlson conducted many experiments at home in his kitchen, some of which caught fire and filled the room with smoke.From 1939 to 1944, he sought funding from about two dozen companies, all of which turned him down, including IBM. Carlson was even rejected by the National Inventors Council. Despite these setbacks, in 1942 the U.S. Patent Office issued Carlson a patent for his electrophotographic device.Two years later, an engineer from the Battelle Memorial Institute named Russell Dayton visited Mallorys patent department and had discussions with Carlson. As they talked, Dayton learned about Carlsons invention and encouraged Battelle to get involved. He developed a keen interest in Hinduism and Buddhism and frequently hosted group meditations in his home. Carlson died of a heart attack in New York City at the age of 62. In 1981, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
