Each year, the New Faces program spotlights the accomplishments of early career engineers and engineering students and the contributions they make to the profession and to society. Emily Worinkeng welches named ASMEs New Faces of Engineering winner for 2017 in the Professional category.Worinkeng was named as ASMEs winner in the Professional category, which recognizes the achievements of practicing engineers up to the age of 30. Emily Worinkeng (left) shows a student how to make a paper airplane at an engineering-outreach school event.Worinkeng, who has possessed a passion for aeronautics since chi ldhood, has realized her dream as an engineer at Boeing. What gets me excited about going to work is the knowledge that I acquire about the process of making airplanes as well as working alongside the smartest people in the world, Worinkeng wrote in her New Faces application essay. As I crawl inside the wings of an airplane, I realize this is something not everyone gets to do. It is fascinating to see the 787 airplanes flying and delivered to our customers and to know that I helped make that happen. Being a part of the team that delivered Japans ANA Star Wars-themed Dreamliner was an unforgettable experience. She went on to add, Today, I am doing exactly what I like, which is solving problems and finding efficient ways to improve processes. ASME student member Meredith Burke was selected as ASMEs New Faces?College Edition winner for 2017.Burke, ASMEs 2017 New Faces-College Edition winner, is a mechanical engineering major at Southern Methodist University. Burke, who is also studyin g math and art as her second and third majors, plans to forge a career in engineering that incorporates elements of these other interests. The Naked Truth About Public Speaking
The Naked Truth About Public Speaking The Naked Truth About Public Speaking I listened to my dad. My first job after graduate school was in the training department of a bank, designing and presenting supervisory training programs. At the first workshop I was to teach, my co-presenter didnt show up. I was on my own. All I remember about the workshop is that I got through it. Afterwards, I made the decision to learn all I could about presentation skills. I never wanted to feel that kind of fear again. Its many years later and today I do public speaking almost every week. And I love it. Why? Because along the way, I learned some secrets, which I will share with you.But first, forget the advice you got about picturing the audience naked. It doesnt work. Its leid real, and it doesnt do anything to help you connect with your audience which is your ultimate goal.Decide what you want to have happen as a result of your presentation. By focusing on what you want to convey you start to forget about yourself and move into thinking about your goal. Do you want to impart information? How can you do that clearly and concisely? Do you want to motivate your audience? If so, what do you want them to do? Do you want to persuade your audience? If so, persuade them to do what? After you determine your goal, you can figure out how to get there.Put yourself in the audiences shoes. Why are they there? What do they know about the subject? About you? What do they want to walk away with? Putting yourself in their shoes will make the difference between a presentation that doesnt hit the mark and one that they will enjoy and remember. And, thinking about your audiences needs moves you from thinking about yourself to thinking about others.Organize your thoughts. When I outline a presentation, I start in the middle by writing down the key points I want to make. I think of stories I can tell and data I want to include. Next I figure out how I will close my presentation. Last, I figure out h ow I will open. When I begin to speak, I often have memorized my opening and closing and know my outline. That leaves me free to speak extemporaneously and naturally throughout the core of my speech. While you are writing the outline of your speech, anticipate and answer questions the audience might have. Ask yourself What are the weak points of my case? What is the most difficult thing I have presented? What can I do to express it in another way? If you are prepared, you wont be so scared.Speak from your heart. Dont be bashful about showing your personal commitment to the ideas you are presenting. The most compelling thing you can do is be real to be authentically, genuinely yourself and no one can do that as well as you. Forget what you were told about standing still and not moving your hands when you speak. Do what comes naturally.Connect with your audience. Ask questions of participants. Make meaningful eye contact with as many people as you can. The former Mayor of New York, E d Koch, often asked its citizens, How am I doing? The key to connecting with any audience is not knowing how to give to them, but knowing how to receive support from them.Tell a story. Who doesnt love a story? Who doesnt want to be drawn in and captivated? Powerful personal stories increase the impact of any presentation, increase retention and believability, and help you clarify your message. Tie your message to the story. Tell how the story shaped your thinking, taught you a lesson, or allowed you to see things or do things differently.Begin when you are ready. Take your time, and get centered. Breathe. Focus. Look at your audience. You may have stage fright. So what? Most of us do. Honor it and move through it. In surveys, many people report that their fear of public speaking is greater even than their fear of death. You may never completely get over the fear of speaking in public, but you can learn to move through it with grace.Becoming a polished speaker takes time, but its a s kill that can be learned. Use every opportunity you can to speak because the more you do it, the better you become.

How to Be Proactive at Work to Stand Out - The Muse
How to Be Proactive at Work to Stand Out - The MuseHow to Be Proactive at Work to Stand OutCongratulations to Erin Olander for her winning essay on What Career Advice Would You Give to Your Younger Self? The runner-up essays will be published in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more terrific career advice from a few of our readers.I wish someone had warned me that when you get your first job, no one is going to tell you what to do. (Well, OK, in some positions they will- theyll have specific training sessions for you to attend, or assign you to a specific rotation for a year). But if youre like I was four years ago, armed with a liberal arts degree and no relevant experience in the industry youre about to enter, then the following words are for you. There are no midterms or finals anymore. Theres no syllabus that outlines when papers are due or suggests additional reading (as you can probably tell, I was always very good at doing what I was told). At work- whether youre starting a new job, you just got promoted, or youre making a career change- you have to figure out how you can contribute. Being proactive is key. But when you dont have any experience or the right kind of experience, being proactive can be challenging. And what I wish I could go back and tell my 22-year-old self is this Ask questions. Ask so many questions that you start to annoy your manager (because genuine curiosity and enthusiasm will never actually annoy your manager). The beauty of being new is that no one expects you to be an expert.Asking questions however, requires some measure of vulnerability. It means being willing to admit what you dont know. This is something Ive always struggled with. I spent the first year-and-a-half of my job right out of school asking zero questions because I was working for incredibly smart people, and I didnt want them to think I was stupid. That was stupid. I lost out on 18 months of learning and building skills that probably wouldve propelled me to wher e I am now in my career a lot sooner.Because heres the hard truth No one is going to take you by the hand and tell you how to move forward on your own career path. My managers were too busy doing their own jobs to think of extra tasks or projects to assign me that would help me grow. During the 18 months in which I wasnt asking questions, I was executing everything within the scope of my job description seamlessly. But thats all I was doing, and I was so, so bored. Turns out that the best way to prove youre ready for more responsibilities is to just actually take on those responsibilities. When I finally realized I wasnt going to move up the ladder at my company by doing only what was expected of me, I started to proactively look for ways to help my team. When my manager said Wouldnt it be nice if we had a report that... or We dont have research on those competitors... I jumped at the chance to fill in the gaps. And my supervisor noticed.I wish I could tie up this anecdote by tellin g you that asking questions and being proactive led to a promotion and that Im now doing exactly what I want to be doing. Im not, and I cant even sweeten this story by telling you that I got promoted. I work in an industry thats facing some pretty complex challenges right now, and unfortunately the opportunity to move up within my old department didnt pan out. But I can tell you that Im kicking butt in my current role and recently received an exceeds expectations rating during my year-end review, which is pretty rare at my company. And while Im not exactly where Id like to be, I did learn this The most successful people Ive met throughout my professional experience know what they dont know, and arent afraid to admit it. They are inquisitive and enjoy figuring out how they can help their teams, regardless of what their job title is. They are thinkers and problem solvers, and most importantly, they dont sit around and wait to be told what to do. For the past year, for example, Ive been fortunate enough to work for someone who fits this exact description. My current supervisor joined my company last year after having spent 12 years in a completely different industry. On her first day she probably asked me 30 different questions about our distribution processes. Now just one year later, shes led and executed several projects that have resulted in significant cost savings for the company and improved processes for product shipments. Shes successful because shes curious and thoughtful and enjoys figuring out how she can help our company move forward, which, in turn, has inspired me to do the same.So while school is over (and may have been for quite some time now), learning doesnt have to be. And if you want to continue to move forward, your education will never be finished. But just how much you decide you want to learn and grow is completely up to you. Judging from the few years that Ive been out in the real world, I can tell you that limiting yourself or stopping w hen you finish the assignment wont get you anywhere that matters.Photo of woman working at computer courtesy of alvarez/Getty Images.

Decisions 5 choices you will regret forever and what you should do
Decisions 5 choices you will regret forever and what you should doDecisions 5 choices you will regret forever and what you should doOur days are filled with a constant stream of decisions. Most are mundane, but some are so important that they can haunt you for the rest of your life.A recent study from Columbia University found that were bogged down by more than 70 decisions a day. The sheer number of decisions we have to make each day leads to a phenomenon called decision fatigue, whereby your brain actually tires like a muscle.A recentstudy from the University of Texas shows that even when our brains arent tired, they can make it very difficult for us to make good decisions. When making a decision, instead of referencing the knowledge weve accumulated, our brains focus on specific, detailed memories. For example, if youre buying a new car and trying to decide if you should go for the leather seats, even though you know you cant afford it, your brain might focus on memories of the won derful smell and feel of the leather seats in your brothers sports car, when it should be focused on the misery youre going to experience when making your monthly car payments. Since you dont have memories of this yet, its a hard thing for your brain to contemplate.I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions. Stephen CoveySome decisions are minor, such as what to eat, which route to drive to work, or in what bestellung to tackle tasks.Others are more difficult, such as choosing between two job offers, whether to move to a new city for someone you love, or whether to cut a toxic person out of your life.Regardless of the magnitude of the decision, our brains make it hard for us to keep the perspective we need to make good choices.Bronnie Ware spent her career as a palliative care nurse, working exclusively with people who were 3 to 12 months from death. She made a habit of asking them about their greatest regrets, and she heard the same five regrets time and time again. By studying these regrets, you can make certain that you make good choices and dont fall victim to them yourself.1. They wish they hadnt made decisions based on what other people thinkWhen you make your decisions based on other peoples opinions, two things tend to happen. You make a poor career choice. There are too many people out there who studied for a degree they regret or even spent their lives pursuing a career they regret. Whether youre seeking parental approval or pursuing pay and prestige over passion, making a poor career choice is a decision that will live with you forever. You fail to uphold your morals. When you get too caught up in what your boss thinks of you, how much money you think your spouse needs to be happy, or how bad you will look if you fail, you are at high risk of violating your own morals. Your intense desire to make yourselflook goodcompromises your ability to stay true to yourself and, ultimately, tofeel good. The best way to avoid falling prey to the opinions of others is to realize that other peoples opinions are just that - opinions. Regardless of how great or terrible they think you are, thats only their opinion. Your true self-worth comes from within.2. They wish they hadnt worked so hardWorking hard is a great way to impact the world, to learn, to grow, to feel accomplished, and sometimes even to find happiness, but it becomes a herausforderung when you do so at the expense of the people closest to you. Ironically, we often work hard to make money for the people we care about without realizing that they value our company more than money. The key is to find a balance between doing what you love and being with the people you love. Otherwise youll look back one day and wish youd focused more on the latter.3. They wish they had expressed their feelingsWere taught as children that emotions are dangerous and that they must be bottled up and controlled. This usually works at first, but boxing up your feelings causes them to grow until they erupt. The best thing you can do is to put your feelings directly on the table. Though its painful to initiate, it forces you to be honest and transparent. For example, if you feel as though you dont make enough money at work, schedule a meeting with your boss and propose why you think youre worth more. As a result, she will either agree with you and give you a raise or disagree and tell you what you do need to do to become more valuable. On the other hand, if you do nothing and let your feelings fester, this will hinder your performance and prevent you from reaching your goal.4. They wish they had stayed in touch with their friendsWhen you get caught up in your weekly routine, its easy to lose sight of how important people are to you, especially those you have to make time for. Relationships with old friends are among the first things to fall off the table when were busy. This is unfortunate because spending time with friends is a major stress buster. Close friends bring you energy, fresh perspectives, and a sense of belonging, in a way that no one else can.5. They wish they had let themselves be happyWhen your life is about to end, all the difficulties youve faced suddenly become trivial compared to the good times. This is because you realize that, more often than not, suffering is a choice. Unfortunately, most people realize this far too late.Although we all inevitably experience pain, how we react to our pain is completely under our control, as is our ability to experience joy. Learning to laugh, smile, and be happy (especially when stressed) is a challenge at times, but its one thats worth every ounce of effort.Bringing it all togetherSome decisions have repercussions that can last a lifetime. Most of these decisions are made daily, and they require focus and perspective to keep them from haunting you.Travis Bradberry is the co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the co-founder of TalentSmart. This article originally appeared on Linked In.

Beauty therapy training goes digital
Beauty therapy training goes digital Beauty therapy training goes digitalPosted July 13, 2012, by Molly Wiltshire-Bridle When it comes to modern-day study, classrooms are fast becoming a thing of the past and beauty therapy training now joins the raft of courses being delivered online. It might seem counter-intuitive, but digital technologies such as Skype and YouTube have rapidly transformed the teaching of more hands on courses such as beauty therapy, enabling beauty students to train via new and exciting portals. Mellissa Luke, Online Distance Education Tutor at the Australian National College of Beauty (ANCB), says the demand speaks for itself, with 65 per cent of the colleges current Diploma of Beauty students choosing to complete their studies online. The online nature of the course appeals not only to those who are located in regional areas through Australia, but also to those who are time poor and want to study at their own pace and in their own time, says Luke. The A NCBs comprehensive beauty therapy programs cover treatments including spa therapies, massage, natural remedies, microdermabrasion and facials, with various elective streams also available. The practical component of each course is delivered on unigelnde via an intensive six-day workshop. Once complete, students use a variety of online support tools including video, forums and Skype meetings to carry out their training from home. Online learning portals provide students with continuous access to course material, which students use to build a client portfolio each time a treatment is performed. Its about building evidence of their practical work, says Luke. We constantly monitor our learning portal we answer questions and students queries all the time. This far-reaching support network encouraged Taryn Grech, current student of ANCBs Diploma of Beauty Therapy, to pursue her education online. As a stay-at-home mum in regional New South Wales, studying beauty online with ANCB gi ves me the opportunity to learn new skills to re-enter the workforce when my son is older, says Grech. I complete the practical elements on family and friends and I volunteer my time at the local community centre to give beauty treatments at no cost. This helps to put my name out there as a beauty therapist in training and enables me to build a client base for the future, she says. Each of ANCBs programs provides students with continual support and guidance throughout their coursework, to ensure that they graduate job-ready. The college also offers a career management portal, where students can seek assistance in fine-tuning job applications and hunting for placements. ANCB has very strong industry relations. We want to produce industry-ready therapists, says Luke. The online distance education provides a flexible atmosphere whilst also ensuring students are qualified to safely undertake beauty treatments during and upon completion of their Diploma, she adds. For anyone left unsure about whether to take the plunge and enrol in an online beauty therapy course, Grech offers this final word of advice.
